# Binary Pathway

> Binary Pathway is a two-word paired language framework for technology leaders. It uses paired terms (trust and confidence, accountability and transparency, push and pull, delegation and abdication, explaining and encoding) to give technologists, engineering managers, and CTOs a precise vocabulary for the leadership moves they actually need to make. The framework is used in coaching engagements inside Techshin Partners and as a standalone language tool by leaders developing their craft.

## About

Binary Pathway was developed by Timothy J. Hitchens, a six-time CTO with nearly seven years at Amazon Web Services. It is one of the core frameworks underpinning the Techshin Partners practice, particularly in C-Level Technology Leadership engagements.

The framework exists because the language available to technologists for leadership work is usually inadequate. Words like "trust", "accountability", and "delegation" are used so loosely they stop meaning anything. Binary Pathway pairs each of these terms with a counterpart that sharpens the meaning. The pairs force precision.

## Example pairs

- Trust and Confidence: Trust is given without evidence. Confidence is earned by track record. A technology leader needs both, but they are distinct.

- Accountability and Transparency: Accountability is owning the outcome. Transparency is showing the working. Without transparency, accountability is just blame.

- Push and Pull: Push leadership directs. Pull leadership invites. Knowing when to switch is the move.

- Delegation and Abdication: Delegation transfers responsibility with structure. Abdication transfers it without structure. The difference is what makes the work succeed or fail.

- Explaining and Encoding: Explaining is a one-time event. Encoding is making the message survive without you in the room.

## How it is used

Binary Pathway is used inside Techshin Partners coaching engagements (primarily C-Level Technology Leadership). Each pair is introduced when the situation calls for it. The technology leader uses the pair to diagnose what is actually happening, then to make the correct move.

The pairs are also used as a self-coaching tool by technologists working alone on their leadership development.
